Washington, DC – Jamal Abdi, President of the National Iranian American Council, issued the following statement on reports that several Iranian-American dual nationals have been furloughed from their unjust imprisonment in Iran:
“This is welcome news and we are hopeful that this is just the first step and these unjustly detained Iranian Americans will be free to return home and reunite with their loved ones very soon. The pain and irrevocable loss they have experienced is difficult to imagine. We are encouraged by the Biden administration’s prioritization of this matter and the ongoing diplomatic efforts with regional interlocutors to secure their release.
“If reports are true that these Iranian Americans will soon be freed and that Iranian funds frozen by U.S. sanctions will be released for the purpose of addressing food and medicine shortages for ordinary people in Iran, this is a win-win.
“It is impossible to make up for the time that has been robbed from the prisoners, but we hope this furlough is an irreversible step toward their full freedom and that one day all prisoners of conscience detained in Iran are free.”
