Chaos in the Capitol

Hours ago, a pro-Trump mob stormed the U.S. Capitol, forcing the evacuation of legislators and staff amid a joint session to certify the results of the Presidential election. The chaos outside the Capitol, spurred on by President Trump himself and abetted by some lawmakers working inside the chamber to block the election certification, intensified throughout the day as rioters ripped out metal barricades, broke windows, assaulted police officers and pulled down American flags in favor of flying flags brandishing Trump’s name.

Make no mistake, the intent of these extremists is clear: to overturn the will of the American people and keep Trump in office illegally. It is outrageous and dangerous, but it will not succeed.

Many of our families came to this country to flee political violence and revolution, and chart a brighter future in a comparatively stable democracy. We know just how important, and fragile, democracy can be. We cherish the right to peaceful assembly and dissent and abhor violence that hijacks our rights. That is why we have warned from the beginning just how dangerous Donald Trump is and consistently pushed back on legislators who treat politics like a frivolous game.

Our community has skin in the game. Our safety and prosperity depends on America being a functioning, multi-ethnic democracy. For nearly 250 years, the United States has managed to uphold the democratic transfer of power—and we will do everything in our power to ensure that the will of our community, and of all Americans, is not diminished by a loud and hateful few.
