Washington DC - NIAC’s funding has grown significantly over the last few years. The structure of NIAC’s financing reflectsthe organization's grass-roots nature and the strong support it enjoys in the Iranian-American community. NIAC is an organization for Iranian Americans because it’s funded by Iranian Americans. At the same time, we have been fortunate enough to receive support and grants from major US and Iranian-American foundations such as Ploughshares Fund, Colombe Foundation, National Endowment for Democracy, Tides Foundation, Kenbe Foundation, Pluralism Fund, Open Society Institute, Connect US, Parsa Foundation, the Hand Foundation, Ahoora Foundation, the Houtan Foundation and the Eurasia Foundation.

  • NIAC’s revenue has increased consistently over its first five years from $79,000 in 2002 to over $411,000 in 2006 at an average rate of 51.1 per cent per year.
  • Over five years, NIAC has raised over $1.15 million. Iranian-American donations stood for 71.45 per cent of these funds.
  • In 2006 NIAC began to advocate for a peaceful solution to the US-Iran conflict. Between 2005 and 2006, donations from Iranian-Americans rose by 15.47 per cent.
  • In 2006 the average donation to NIAC was $159.84 while 86.45 per cent of NIAC’s non-grant revenue came from small donations (less than $5,000).

The National Iranian American Council is a registered non-profit 501 c(3) organization. As such, NIAC’s finances are a matter of public record.

Transparency is extremely important to NIAC. It is through openness that trust is built and doubt is removed. It is particularly important in the Iranian-American community, due to a long history of non-transparency, which in turn has contributed to a distrustful environment.

NIAC wishes to strengthen a culture of transparency in our community by leading as an example: We have decided to post all of NIAC’s tax-returns since our inception in 2002 in PDF format on our website to make it as easy as possible for interested parties to review them.
