Call your Senators to urge them to vote NO on the Rounds amendment.

Can you imagine agreeing to purchase property and having the President of the United States void the sale because you are an Iranian national?

Unfortunately, that is exactly what the Senate voted on this past July. A dangerous amendment by Senator Rounds (R-SD) offered to the National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2024 would ban Iranians – along with Chinese, Russians and North Koreans – from purchasing certain agricultural property or private real estate used in agriculture.

This would not just impose government-sanctioned restrictions on land purchases in the U.S. based on nationality, it risks encouraging racial and ethnic profiling against communities like ours and opens the gates to further government restrictions based on nationality or ethnic heritage.

If passed into law, this new alien land law would be applied at the federal level across all fifty states – as has been proposed by far-right and radical governors in recent months.

Take Action and Call your Senators to urge them to vote NO on the Rounds amendment.

Step 1: Find your house representative and your senators and pick a time before 5 PM ET to call.

Step 2: Dial 844-ACT-NIAC (844-228-6422) to connect with the Capitol Switchboard and ask the operator to connect you to your representative’s office.

Step 3: When you connect with the office, whether it’s with a person or the voicemail, make sure to say your name and that you are a constituent and that you want to express your alarm about the Rounds amendment on the Senate NDAA.

Here is a sample script you can use, but you are encouraged to share your personal reasons for why you want your representatives why you oppose the Rounds Amendment:

“Hello my name is [YOUR NAME] and I’m a constituent from [YOUR CITY/TOWN]. I’m calling to ask Senator [last name] oppose Amendment #813 to National Defense Authorization Act. This amendment follows similar discriminatory legislation recently passed by Florida Governor Ron Desantis and opposed by the Biden Justice Department. It would impose a property ban on nationals of Iran, China, Russia and North Korea and is a slippery slope to further discrimination against immigrant communities.

Do not open the door to national-origin discrimination that echoes the racist alien land laws from America’s darkest chapters. Will the Senator call for the amendment’s removal from the NDAA or, at least, for the harmful and targeting language to be removed?

 

Step 4: Text 5 of your friends or family members to ask them to make a call as well! The more calls we can generate, the more likely we are to win.
