The State of Washington recognizes Norooz and affirms support for the Iranian people!

Olympia, WA – The Washington State House has officially recognized Norooz, marking a significant step in acknowledging the rich cultural history of Iranian Americans and their contributions to our society. NIAC celebrates this achievement and commends the Washington State House for standing in solidarity with the Iranian-American community.

The passage of this resolution highlights the importance of Norooz, a celebration of renewal, hope, and unity that has been observed for over 3,000 years. We are delighted to see the Washington State House recognize the cultural significance of Norooz, which is celebrated by nearly 300 million people across the globe, including more than 1 million Americans and tens of thousands in Washington state.

NIAC chapters have been proud to contribute to the crucial organizing work in support of the Iranian people happening around the country. Almost two dozen resolutions supporting the movement for human rights and democracy, led by Iranian women, have passed at the local level.

We extend a special thank you to Representative Darya Farivar for organizing this resolution, and to our dedicated volunteers in Washington State who helped develop the resolution. This resolution not only recognizes the vital role of Iranian Americans in the state’s diverse landscape but also emphasizes the values of generosity, compassion, selflessness, and community stewardship that Norooz represents.

The Washington State House resolution states, “In this time where mistrust and fear often threaten to divide us, the spirit of Nowruz inspires us to realize our commonalities and strive for new levels of compassion, understanding, and love for our fellow human beings”. We encourage everyone to read the full proclamation below and will continue to work with American civic leaders to stand in solidarity with the Iranian people in their quest for a free and democratic society.
