Washington DC – Jamal Abdi, President of the National Iranian American Council (NIAC), issued the following statement after reports of alleged Iranian interference in U.S. elections:

“All foreign and illegitimate interference in American elections must be condemned and any effort to prevent Americans from voting is completely unacceptable. DNI Ratcliffe’s allegations that Iran has engaged in cyber activities intended to intimidate voters in select localities should be investigated.

“We should be careful about drawing conclusions about the scale or the intent if these claims bear out. Iran is certainly not monolithic regarding who its government would prefer to win the U.S. election. However, simply sewing doubts has also been a hallmark of foreign interference.

“Regrettably, the Trump administration has eroded its credibility across the board on these issues, including by sowing doubt in our elections process, inviting foreign interference, and politicizing intelligence including on all things Iran. The best way to counter illegitimate interference in our election, whether from at home or abroad, is to ensure all Americans have the opportunity to cast their ballot securely and for everyone to go vote.”
