The National Iranian American Council (NIAC) released the following statement regarding today’s speech by Mahmoud Ahmadinejad at the United Nations General Assembly:

“The international community should not be distracted by today’s predictably incendiary speech by Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.  We must not allow the words of a politically marginalized president who is on the last leg of his presidency to distract from the very serious human rights abuses that continue to occur in Iran and the looming threat of a disastrous war between the U.S., Israel and Iran.

“NIAC reiterates its condemnation of the Iranian government’s abuses against the Iranian people and continues to call for all political prisoners in Iran to be released.  NIAC also calls on the international community to take necessary steps to resolve the standoff with Iran through determined diplomacy and to prevent a war that would be disastrous for Iran’s indigenous human rights and democracy defenders, as well as the people of Iran, Israel and the United States.”
