Coalition of 25 Organizations Lead Effort to Defeat Kyl-Lieberman War Amendment

Washington DC – A coalition of 25 organizations have been leading a charge to defeat the Lieberman-Kyl amendment. Several Senators believe that the amendment will bring the US one decisive step closer to war with Iran. The text of a letter circulated to all Senate offices yesterday is attached. Though the effort failed to defeat the amendment, it managed to ensure that the most dangerous aspects of the amendment – Section 3 and 4 – were eliminated.

Decisive Victory for Lantos Sanctions Bill

Washington DC- The Iran Counter-Proliferation Act of 2007 (HR 1400) was passed overwhelmingly by the House in a 397-16 vote today, coinciding with Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad’s visit to New York City to address the U.N. General Assembly. Among the nay sayers were four Republicans: Rep. Jeff Flake (R-AZ), Rep. Wayne Gilchrest (R-MD), Rep. Ron E. Paul (R-TX), Rep. Roscoe Bartlett (R-MD), and 12 Democrats. The sister bill (S.970) with 68 co-sponsors has yet to be considered by the Senate. If passed by the Senate and signed by the President, this legislation would have significant implications for the US policy toward Iran and the US relationship with allies. The legislation targets foreign US subsidiaries, thus signifying extra-territorial application of US law.

Washington DC – Congress will vote on an amendment today that, if adopted, would charge Iran with fighting a “proxy war against the Iraqi state and coalition forces in Iraq.'' Senator Jon Kyl (R-AZ) introduced the measure as an amendment to the Defense Authorization Act (S.1547) on Friday. It is being cosponsored by Senator Joe Lieberman (I-CT) and Senator Norm Coleman (R-MN).

Iran a Rising Power?

“[Iran] certainly is an aspiring power if it’s not a rising one” said renowned author and University of St. Andrews Professor Ali Ansari.  The comment came during a September 14 conference on aspiring powers put on by the Elliot School of International Affairs at George Washington University. Coinciding with increasingly frequent accusations about Iran’s aspirations for hegemony in the region, Ansari discussed Iran’s ambitions and the implications of its rise.

Lieberman Injects $75 million for Iran Democracy into Appropriations Bill

At a late night session in the Senate on Friday, Senator Joe Lieberman (I-VT) submitted an amendment to provide $75 million for “democracy promotion in Iran." The amendment, which was cosponsored by Senators Sam Brownback (R-KS), Jon Kyl (R-AZ), Lindsey Graham (R-SC), Susan Collins (R-ME), Mel Martinez (R-FL), David Vitter (R-LA), passed by voice vote in the State and Foreign Operations Appropriations Act (HR 2764).

Gingrich Urges Nation to Re-think War on Terror

Washington DC – “Six years after the attack of 9/11, the difference between the debate we ought to be having and the debate we are having is staggering” said former speaker of the House Newt Gingrich during a lecture at the American Enterprise Institute this Monday. Apparently timed to coincide with the highly anticipated testimony of General David Petraeus before congress, Gingrich’s remarks addressed the need to refocus national attention on the larger war against the “irreconcilable wing of Islam” – not just the war in Iraq.

Khalaji highlights problems with US Persian-language broadcasts

Washington DC – “These media outlets do not help to serve the interests of either the United States or Iran” said Mehdi Khalaji, referring to US funded Persian-language media at an event sponsored by the Iranian Cultural Society in Vienna, VA. Khalaji, a former Persian-language producer at Radio Farda and BBC, criticized what he called the ineffectiveness of State Department funded Radio Farda and Voice of America (VOA) Television’s Persian-language service in achieving the goals set out by the US Congress. CA Democratic Party Calls for Change in Iran Policy

Washington DC – “The California Democratic Party calls on Congress to oppose unprovoked military action against Iran and the use of sanctions as a ‘tool of escalation’…and instead support direct talks between the United States and Iran without preconditions,” reads a resolution embraced by state democratic party July 15. The resolution was crafted to give voice to mounting opposition among California democrats to the direction of current US policy towards Iran.

With Little Debate, House Supports State Divestment Movement

Washington, DC – The House of Representatives approved legislation today that would authorize state divestment from Iran. The chamber’s approval of HR 2347, the Iran Sanctions Enabling Act, is a major step forward for forces bent on isolating Iran. The Iran Sanctions Enabling Act (formally the Iran Sanctions Act of 2007) passed the House 408-6 under a rule that allows a bill to be voted on following only an hour of debate.

Rep. Udall Seeks to Curb Administration’s War Making Ability

Washington DC – "I think today that Congress, which has the constitutional responsibility to declare war, must play a more significant role in authorizing the use of our armed forces in what could become a full-scale war," Representative Mark Udall (D-CO) said of his bill that would prohibit President Bush from waging war on Iran without Congressional authorization. H.R. 3119 would rely on Congress' power of the purse to deny funds for any major military engagement without prior approval.
