Joe Biden’s decision to withdraw from the 2024 Presidential race is a noble one, putting American democracy ahead of his personal ambitions and pride.
The choices for our country right now are stark and it is imperative that Americans have the opportunity to choose a leader who will protect democracy and civil rights at home and work for peace abroad.
We greatly appreciated many efforts by the Biden administration, including the day one rescission of the Muslim ban that discriminated against Iranian Americans. However, we were deeply disappointed by the failure to restore the 2015 nuclear agreement and horrified by the administration’s support for the ongoing devastation in Gaza.
Anyone who hopes to secure the Democratic nomination and defeat Donald Trump, including Kamala Harris, should commit to chart a foreign policy that makes a clean break from the militarism and slaughter that is still unfolding today. Critically, it seems abundantly clear that fresh thinking is needed – both in the Oval Office and in the national security team that surrounds the President.
We are hopeful that a new candidate can present new leadership on these issues and win in November.
