Washington, DC – The National Iranian American Council issued the following statement urging the UN Third Committee to approve a resolution concerning the human rights situation in Iran:

“The National Iranian American Council, the largest grassroots Iranian-American organization, strongly support passage of a UN resolution regarding human rights in Iran. NIAC urges members of the UN Third Committee to vote in approval of the draft resolution today and for the full General Assembly to approve the final resolution when it comes to a vote.

“NIAC reiterates its call for the Iranian government to free all political prisoners and prisoners of conscience, grant the UN Special Rapporteur on human rights in Iran full access to the country, and take additional steps necessary to uphold its human rights obligations. While the recent positive steps on human rights taken under Iran’s new president are welcome, including the release of certain prisoners of conscience, systematic violations of human rights continue to occur and must be addressed.”
