NIAC Congratulates Freed Americans; Urges Release of Political Prisoners in Iran

Washington, DC – NIAC welcomes the release of Shane Bauer and Josh Fattal from their 782-day detention in Iran’s Evin prison.  NIAC congratulates Josh, Shane and their families, and calls on Iran to release all political prisoners who remain detained.

“Iranian Americans often know all too well the anguish of having a friend or loved one detained by Iran’s government, and we could not be more happy to see Shane and Josh finally come home to reunite with their families,” said Trita Parsi, NIAC President.  “As we celebrate the end of this ordeal, we are reminded of the hundreds of political and religious prisoners who remain jailed in Iran and who must also be released.”

NIAC reiterates its call for Iran comply with its human rights obligations.  Iran should take the additional step of allowing the UN human rights monitor on Iran, Ahmed Shaheed, into the country and to have unfettered access to Evin prison and other sites throughout Iran so he can complete his report to the UN on the human rights situation there.

“If the Iranian government is trying win goodwill with this release, they should seek the goodwill of their own people as well and immediately release all political prisoners in Iran,” said Parsi.
