NIAC commends today’s announcement that the Obama Administration is designating the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), Basij paramilitary, Iran’s national police and its chief for U.S. financial and visa restrictions due to their involvement in human rights abuses against the Iranian people.

NIAC issued the following statement:

“This is an important and welcome effort that helps give the human rights situation in Iran the attention it deserves,” said NIAC Policy Director Jamal Abdi.  “We welcome measures like these that are targeted in such a way to hold human rights violators accountable without punishing the ordinary Iranians already suffering under these abuses.”

NIAC was instrumental last year in supporting the Stand With the Iranian People Act, introduced by Rep. Keith Ellison (D-MN), which was the first-ever legislation to impose targeted measures against human rights violators in Iran and to ease U.S. restrictions on Internet communication and civil society that harm ordinary Iranians.
