Washington, DC – The National Iranian American Council issued a statement condemning the Iranian government’s execution of 23 year-old Mohsen Shekari, who was arrested in connection with protests following the killing of 22 year-old Mahsa Amini.

“The execution of Mohsen Shekari just weeks after a sham trial is an outrage and a profound miscarriage of justice, and represents yet another young life ended by the Islamic Republic’s brutality. What we have seen over the last three months is brave Iranians putting their lives on the line to stand up for a brighter future, and the Iranian government brutally killing the youth of its country to stop them. The National Iranian American Council unequivocally condemns the execution of Shekari and calls on the Iranian government to halt all executions and free the 18,000 prisoners who have been unjustly detained.

“At this critical juncture where so many lives are on the line, the international community must do more. Important steps have been taken – including the publication of a license supporting internet freedom in Iran by the Biden administration and the establishment of a new fact finding mission by the United Nations.

“Just yesterday, the House and Senate foreign affairs committees unanimously approved matching resolutions standing with the people of Iran, condemning the Iranian government’s brutality, calling for targeted sanctions and urging steps to support internet freedom. Now, the ball is in the court of Congressional leadership. We urge Majority Leader Schumer and Speaker Pelosi to move these resolutions swiftly to the floor. Congress cannot stand idly by while these abuses intensify. It must send a crystal clear message that it stands with the people of Iran and against the brutality of the Iranian government by passing these resolutions without delay.”
