15 Organizations Urge Biden Restore Iran Nuclear Deal, Highlight Risks of Failure

Washington, DC – On June 24th, NIAC was among 15 organizations – including J Street, Ploughshares Fund, Quincy Institute for Responsible Statecraft and Win Without War – that sent a letter to President Biden underscoring the risks of continuing on the present course without reviving the Iran nuclear deal. More than a year and a half into Biden’s term in office, the deal is not restored and Trump-era sanctions continue to punish the Iranian people and provoke further Iranian nuclear escalation. U.S., Iranian and European negotiators are set to reconvene in Doha this week for indirect negotiations aimed at restoring the agreement.

According to the letter, “Failure to renew the JCPOA will force your administration to double down on Trump’s disastrous maximum pressure strategy. Just as this strategy was a self-inflicted wound under Trump, it will be so under your watch as well. Rather than moving closer to Iranian capitulation, Tehran will ratchet up its nuclear capabilities and we will inch closer to war with Iran.”

The letter was signed by American Friends Service Committee, Americans for Peace Now, Common Defense, Council for a Livable World, Demand Progress, Foreign Policy for America, Indivisible, J Street, National Iranian American Council, Peace Action, Ploughshares Fund, Presbyterian Church Office of Public Witness, Quincy Institute for Responsible Statecraft, Win Without War and Women’s Action for New Directions (WAND).
