Tragedy in Haiti: Our Turn to Give Back

Washington, DC – On Tuesday evening, a magnitude 7.0 earthquake struck Haiti, damaging the nation’s already fragile infrastructure and affecting millions. Though the extent of the damage is still unknown, American aid organizations have quickly mobilized a massive relief effort.

As Iranian Americans, we cannot help but be reminded of the devastating Bam earthquake in 2003, when the world turned its attention on how to help Iranians affected by the quake.  Now is our time to give back.

Through a united effort, the Iranian-American community can help provide much-needed relief services to the people of Haiti.

Here are six ways you can help:

1) Text “HAITI” to 90999 to donate $10 to the American Red Cross

The US State Department is working with the Red Cross to solicit donations via a $10 telephone charge.  By texting “HAITI” to 90999, your phone company will add $10 to your next bill, and send the money directly to the Red Cross.

Additionally, donations can be mailed to:

The American Red Cross
P.O. Box 4002018
Des Moines, IA 50340

Or donate online directly

2) Text “YELE” to 501501 to donate $5 to Yele Haiti

As a Haitian native, renowned musician Wyclef Jean created this foundation several years ago to help aid the most impoverished people in his home country. 100% of funds raised through this service go to the Haitian Earthquake relief operation.
