Santa Monica Stands with Iranian Women: Congratulations to our LA Chapter for Tireless Organizing

Washington, DC – The Santa Monica City Council has recognized the bravery of the Iranian people, especially Iranian women, who have been risking their lives to protest against an oppressive and corrupt regime.

NIAC applauds the Santa Monica City Council for signing a resolution that recognizes the sacrifices and struggles of the Iranian people, stands with them in their fight for freedom and justice, and calls on technology companies to support Iranian Internet freedom. We also congratulate our incredible Los Angeles chapter members for their tireless organizing efforts that helped bring attention to this important issue.

This resolution, the development of which we strongly supported, recognizes the courage of Iranian women who have faced brutality and the threat of death as they have taken to the streets to demand human rights and fundamental change against the oppressive regime. The resolution also calls on the United States to take proactive steps to support the Iranian people’s movement by calling on the Biden Administration to “ensure U.S. policies support internet freedom in Iran and counter the Iranian government’s online censorship, surveillance, and repression.” and calling on the Congressional delegation of California to “condemn the rights abuses taking place and take immediate and swift action to hold the Iranian government accountable for its human rights abuses without further punishing the Iranian people”.

NIAC chapters have been proud to contribute to the crucial organizing work, in service of the Iranian people, happening around the country. Almost two dozen resolutions supporting the movement for human rights and democracy, led by Iranian women, have passed at the local level.

We encourage everyone to read the full resolution below and will continue to work with American civic leaders to stand in solidarity with the Iranian people in their pursuit for a free and democratic society.
