Washington, D.C. – National Iranian American Council (NIAC) strongly opposes the issuance of Executive Order “Protecting the United States from foreign terrorists and other National security and public safety threats.” The order would begin a process to reinstate the travel ban, directing federal agencies to begin determining which nationalities will face partial or total visa bans.
“It is not in America’s interest to ban entire countries of people from traveling here. It will hurt American families who will be separated from loved ones, it will hurt our universities as many of the brightest students will offer their knowledge and expertise elsewhere, and it will hurt our economy as America shackles itself while other countries are free to recruit the world’s top talent.”
The order sets a 60-day window for the federal government to begin to revive the harmful and discriminatory travel bans of President Trump’s first term, which originated from his call for ‘a total and complete shutdown of Muslims entering the United States,’ and overwhelmingly targeted Iranians and separated Iranian-American families.
It also introduces dangerous provisions to potentially deport individuals who were lawfully issued visas within the past four years after the ban had been repealed.
“People who came to what is supposed to be the land of freedom and opportunity completely legally are now being told to keep their heads down and their mouths shut or the government may deport them because of where they were born.”
NIAC urges the administration to reverse this harmful policy and calls on Congress and the public to stand against these harmful measures.
