NIAC Staff Members Coauthor “Silencing Iran’s Twitterati”

CoverNIAC is proud to have the work of several NIAC staff members featured in the new book, Media, Power, and Politics in the Digital Age: The 2009 Presidential Election Uprising in Iran. The book consists of a compilation of different pieces from numerous authors, scholars, journalists around the globe analyzing the role media played in the political power struggle during the 2009 presidential elections in Iran and its aftermath.

NIAC Assistant Policy Director David Elliott, former NIAC Assistant Policy Director Patrick Disney, and NIAC President Trita Parsi co-authored “Silencing Iran’s Twitterati: How U.S. Sanctions Muzzle Iran’s Online Opposition.” The work is a detailed examination of how U.S. sanctions blocked the Iranian people’s access to online communication and anticensorship tools during the height of Iran’s post-election protests and crackdown, and the actions that were eventually taken to remove those impediments.
