NIAC Signs Onto Letter Supporting Sanders-Markey Amendment on Pentagon Budget

Washington, DC – NIAC Action signed on to an organizational letter supporting an amendment from Sens. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) and Ed Markey (D-MA) mandating a ten percent cut in the Pentagon budget and a reallocation of resources toward vital domestic needs. 61 organizations – including Peace Action, Public Citizen and Win Without War – backed the effort, which comes as the Senate is planning to pass its annual defense authorization bill this week with minimal debate.

The U.S. vastly outspends its potential adversaries militarily, while pressing domestic needs go unaddressed. The letter highlights how the U.S. spends more militarily than the next nine countries combined, while millions of Americans across the country have lost their job and healthcare amid the COVID-19 pandemic. Budgets reflect priorities, and it is past time for the U.S. to make a break with its long standing blank check for militarism and failure to address urgent domestic needs.

Take Action! If this amendment is going to succeed, your representatives need to hear from you. Dial 844-ACT-NIAC and ask you Senators TODAY to support the Sanders-Markey amendment to mandate a ten percent cut in the Pentagon budget.
