This week, NIAC President Jamal Abdi sat down with KPFA News to talk about the latest developments with JCPOA and the “shuttle diplomacy” that took place in Vienna on April 6th.
With the Trump administration’s sanctions on Iran still in place and President Biden yet to lift these sanctions and return the U.S. to the nuclear agreement, diplomacy is at a critical juncture.
“Iran is effectively on the brink of where it was before the nuclear deal was ever put into place.” opened Jamal. But the talks in Vienna present an opportunity for the U.S. to get back into the JCPOA and #ReSealTheDeal.
And the clock is ticking. Iran’s May presidential elections are fast approaching, and whoever wins could greatly impact future developments round the deal. As Jamal emphasizes, “The fear is, we’re so close to reviving the JCPOA…but it’s likely a hardliner will come into place.”
