There is a big push underway right now to pass legislation that would close the door to a green card for Iranians and many other immigrant communities for the foreseeable future. Now is the time to speak up and urge your legislators to block this bad bill.
H.R. 1044/S. 386, the so-called Fairness for High-Skilled Immigrants Act, would fail to fix the green card backlog and instead shift the burden on to Iranians and other immigrant communities while ensuring that the backlog continues to grow exponentially in the years ahead. The wait for Iranians and other nationals to get a green card could go from no additional time today to over a decade after the bill’s passage, depending on the category, and would grow from there. Call your member of Congress today and ask them to keep the path to green cards open for all communities!
Step 1: Find your House Representative and pick a time before 5 PM ET to call.
Step 2: Dial 844-ACT-NIAC to connect with the Capitol Switchboard. The operator will connect you to your representative’s office.
Step 3: When you connect with the office, whether it’s with a person or the voicemail, make sure to say your name and that you are a constituent and share your concern about H.R. 1044/S. 386. Here’s a sample script:
Hello, my name is [your name] and I am a constituent from [your town] and a member of NIAC Action. I am calling to ask Representative [Rep. Name] to oppose HR 1044 and S 386, the Fairness for High Skilled Immigrants Act, being attached to the spending package and passing in the lame duck. Contrary to its name, this bill is anything but fair. It would fail to fix the green card backlog, shift the burden on to Iranians and other communities and ensure that the backlog continues to grow exponentially in the years ahead. This is a bad bill and I hope you will help block it. Will [Rep. Name] oppose this bill and urge leadership to oppose its inclusion in final spending negotiations?
Step 4: Text 5 of your friends or family members to ask them to make a call as well! The more calls we can generate, the more likely we are to win.
