NIAC Strongly Opposes Restoration of Trump Travel Ban

Washington, D.C. – National Iranian American Council (NIAC) strongly opposes the issuance of Executive Order “Protecting the United States from foreign terrorists and other National security and public safety threats.” The order would begin a process to reinstate the travel ban, directing federal agencies to begin determining which nationalities will face partial or total visa bans.  “It is not in America’s interest to ban entire countries of people from traveling here. It will hurt American families who will be separated from loved ones, it will hurt our universities as many of the brightest students will offer their knowledge and expertise elsewhere, and it will hurt our economy as America shackles itself while other countries are free to recruit the world’s top talent.” The order sets a 60-day window for the federal government to begin to revive the harmful and discriminatory travel bans of President Trump’s first term, which originated from his call for ‘a total and complete shutdown of Muslims entering the United States,’ and overwhelmingly targeted Iranians and separated Iranian-American families.  It also introduces dangerous provisions to potentially deport individuals who were lawfully issued visas within the past four years after the ban had been repealed. “People who came

It does so by directing the Secretary of State and Secretary of Homeland Security to conduct a thorough security review and potentially order “a partial or full suspension on the admission of nationals” from nations deemed deficient in transferring vetting and screening information on visa applicants to the U.S.  Please see below for initial details on what this means and how it can impact you and your loved ones. What does this new executive order do? At a basic level, the Executive Order directs the administration to begin the process of restoring a potential travel ban within 60 days.  The core of the order directs the Secretary of State and Secretary of Homeland Security, in coordination with the Assistant to the President for Homeland Security, to issue a report by March 21, 2025.
