Obama’s State of the Union Sanctions Veto

Wow – what a night! If a couple years ago, you had told me that President Obama would threaten Congress with a sanctions veto in the State of the Union — his most important speech of the year — I would have thought you were crazy.

But last night, the President issued another stern warning to hawks in Congress who are trying to pass a new diplomacy-killing sanctions bill.

Meanwhile, those in Congress who support diplomacy have redoubled their vocal support for the negotiations, including lawmakers like Sen. Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-CA) and Rep. David Price (D-NC). Hillary Clinton came out to back the President and oppose new sanctions. And key lawmakers who supported sanctions last year are looking less and less likely to sign off on sanctions this time.

Will you take 3 minutes to call YOUR Senators and help stop the new sanctions?

The pro-sanctions hawks are not done. They are planning a committee vote on new sanctions next week. And this morning, House Speaker Boehner even invited Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to address Congress on Iran.

The White House called a “breach of protocol,” but Netanyahu is expected to come to Congress in February and speak out strongly for new sanctions.

So – what does all of this mean? It means we have never had a more golden opportunity to block new sanctions and seal a diplomatic deal with Iran, but it also means the hawks will stop at nothing to try to kill it.

That’s why we need to redouble our efforts and CALL our Senators directly to help block the sanctions. We put together an easy-to-use tool so that you can make your calls and know exactly what to say when you get connected. The whole process takes less than three minutes.

>>TAKE ACTION: Call Your Senators

The best time to call is right now, between 9am-5pm EST, during regular business hours, so that you can share your message directly with a staff member in your Senators’ offices.

Please make your call and encourage your friends to do the same. We are closer than ever to victory, and it’s going to take a final push from everyone to get over the finish line and get a deal.
