The Stand With the Iranian People Act

The Stand with the Iranian People Act (SWIPA) changes the course on decades of failed US policies that have hurt the Iranian people and inadvertently contributed to their repression.  SWIPA eliminates barriers preventing American charities and relief organizations from working in Iran while it enacts new laws that punish human rights abusers in the Iranian Government and international companies that assist in the repression of the people of Iran.

WHAT DOES SWIPA DO?

*  Enables American organizations to provide humanitarian assistance directly to the Iranian people, and supports people-to-people exchanges between Americans and Iranians.

*  Prohibits US government contracts for companies that provide censorship software and other tools of repression to the Iranian government.

*  Imposes travel restrictions against Iran's human rights abusers.

WHY IS SWIPA IMPORTANT?

*  US policy should not build barriers that punish innocent Iranians.  Current US sanctions block Americans and Iranians from working together on projects like building hospitals or schools in Iran or promoting human rights.  The Stand with the Iranian People Act (SWIPA) enables organizations to work directly with the Iranian people.  The US must end harmful policies that only serve to cut Iranians off from the world community.

*  Our problem is with Iran's government, not its people.  For decades, Iranians have lived under the double burden of repression by their government and unintended hardship imposed by US sanctions.  In this time, no amount of pressure on Iranian society has elicited a change in the behavior of Iran's government.   Instead, twenty years of sanctions have stifled the middle class and allowed the IRGC and elites to get rich off the black market.  The US must distinguish between Iran's rulers-who are responsible for Iran's troubling behavior-and its people.

*  Companies that support the repression of Iranians should NOT be rewarded with the US government contracts. Companies like Nokia-Siemens provide Iran with tools of repression used against Iranians, such as internet censorship and spying technology.  SWIPA eliminates this funding.  Cutting US funding for companies that help repress Iranians sends the abettors of repression a powerful message.
