Contact: Trevor FitzGibbon Fenton Communications 202-246-5303 Washington DC - The National Iranian American Council deplores Senator John McCain’s comments earlier today when he turned war between the United States and Iran into a joking matter. At a time when so many Members of Congress and retired military leaders are calling for diplomacy to resolve problems with Iran, the Senator’s words are extraordinarily irresponsible. At a town hall meeting in South Carolina Wednesday, Senator McCain answered a question regarding a potential US attack on Iran by singing a song about bombing Iran. "You know that old Beach Boys song, Bomb Iran?" the Arizona Senator said. Then, he sang. "Bomb bomb bomb, bomb bomb Iran." War between the United States and Iran would significantly undermine America’s global and regional position, undermine US national interest by destabilizing the entire Middle East, cause immense loss of innocent life on both sides, strengthen the Iranian government’s hold on power, nearly eliminate Iran’s struggling pro-democracy movement, and cause the US to lose the hearts and minds of the Iranian people – a population that currently holds a positive view of America. “To joke about such a matter at a time when war in the Middle East has done so much to weaken America is beyond comprehension,” said Dr. Trita Parsi, President of the National Iranian American Council. “In a war between the US and Iran, there will be no winners, only losers,” Parsi continued. “Unfortunately, unless there is a marked shift in favor of diplomacy and negotiations, the risk for a confrontation will remain. It would be better if Senator McCain sought to find solutions to this challenge facing America rather than treating it as a joke.” |
