Washington DC - NIAC
is forging ahead with its campaign to achieve SBA 8 (a) benefits for
Iranian-American small business owners. The nation’s largest Iranian-American
organization is enlisting the cooperation of other ethnic minority groups and
reaching out to Iranian-American organizations to bring the issue before the
public and Congress. If
granted, Iranian-American entrepreneurs would be eligible to compete with other
minority communities for lucrative government contracts and services.

What
is the Small Business Administration and why was it set up?
The SBA was established on July 30, 1953, by the United States Congress with the passage of
the Small Business Act. Its function was to "aid, counsel, assist and
protect, insofar as is possible, the interests of small business
concerns." Also stipulated was that the SBA should ensure a "fair
proportion" of government contracts and sales of surplus property to small
business. The SBA also makes loans directly to businesses and acts as a guarantor on
bank loans. In some circumstances it also makes loans to victims of natural
disasters, works to get government procurement contracts for small businesses,
and assists businesses with management, technical and training issues. The SBA
has directly or indirectly helped nearly 20 million businesses and currently
holds a portfolio of roughly 219,000 loans worth more than $45
billion making it the largest single financial backer of businesses in the
United States.

Through the 8(a) Support Project, NIAC will petition the US Small Business Administration on behalf of Iranian Americans to gain recognition of our community’s experiences with social disadvantage. The successful conclusion of this program will bring deserved recognition to the community in this respect, as well as enable Iranian-American small businesses to access the SBA’s 8(a) business development program.

Support NIAC's 8(a) Project
NIAC is proud to announce that it has submitted a petition to the US
Small Business Administration (SBA) to recognize Iranian Americans as
eligible for the 8(a) business development program in late
February. The petition dually demonstrates that the
Iranian-American community has suffered from perennial discrimination
and cultural bias in the business community, and that our community has
tremendous entrepreneurial potential to offer this nation’s economy. An
abstract of the petition will be made available on NIAC’s website in
the near future.
