Congress is exploiting recent tensions to jam through a series of hawkish approaches toward Iran and the Middle East as a whole, including legislation to push forward a ban on U.S. travel to Iran and a package that provides billions to send weapons to Israel and an expansion of broad Iran sanctions.

S.2626 – “The MAHSA Act” – requires the President to determine whether the office of the Supreme Leader and the office of Iran’s President should be designated under existing sanctions authorities. Both the current Supreme Leader and President are already designated under one such authority, so in practical terms this bill would not lead to […]

San Diego, California – The Southern District Court of California issued a sweeping ruling in favor of Bank of America in the ground-breaking class action lawsuit that alleged the bank had discriminated against Iranian Americans in its efforts to comply with U.S. sanctions on Iran. “The Trump administration broke the international consensus around Iran that took years to build,” said Suzanne DiMaggio, senior fellow at Carnegie Endowment for International Peace. “I think this will go down as an epic strategic blunder during the Trump Era.” DiMaggio was speaking on NIAC’s recent panel examining current and future U.S. policy toward Iran, entitled “A Maximum Pressure Exit Strategy: Can the U.S. Save the Iran Nuclear Deal Before it’s Too Late?” Joining DiMaggio as panelists were Jamal Abdi, President of NIAC, and Joe Cirincione, President of the Ploughshares Fund. Sanam Shantyaei, Senior Journalist at France 24, led the panel as moderator.

Administration’s kowtowing to the Netanyahu government’s misbegotten, genocidal military quagmire in Gaza has put U.S. interests, and humanitarian interests across the region, in extreme peril. With each passing incident, efforts to avoid a regional conflagration are being tested.
